Prompt Engineering for Midjourney AI
Art comes from skill—that much is clear. And a programmer programs. When you combine coding and creativity, you’ve arrived at the role of prompt engineer. And when you do all of this using Midjourney V7 , you’re an AI Midjourney Prompt Engineer. But is this really still a creative profession, or could it become obsolete in the future?
It is no longer possible to trace the exact origin of the phrase “Is this art, or can it go?” Today, the question is commonly posed when discussing contemporary art.
So what does this look like when visual content is created on a computer? Does the prompt engineer have a role to play? Yes—because they translate intent into parameters, references, and workflows, and, in addition to stylistic considerations, they also possess tool expertise such as Draft Mode and Omni Reference.
What is AI Midjourney?
AI Midjourney is one of the programs that enables the creation of computer-generated images (CGI) using AI. To put it simply: You enter a short prompt in the chat window— /imagine – and the AI generates an image. You can use Midjourney either on Discord or directly in the web version .
Within a short time, the AI generates a grid of four image suggestions. You select an image and continue working on it—for example, using " Vary," " Pan," or "Zoom Out " in the web editor. After all, while the initial results are usually close to what you had in mind, they’re not exactly what you want. So far, so ordinary.
We’ll admit it: It’s fun to see what the tools come up with based on simple instructions. But: You’re a human being and are used to communicating with people—including tone of voice, pauses, facial expressions, and gestures. AI doesn’t do that. Some of your instructions get lost. No problem: You can be more specific, set parameters, and work with references —more on that in the prompts below. (See Parameter List.)
To put it simply: You enter a brief description of the type of image you want in a chat window. Then the AI generates the image. You can use Midjourney AI via the Discord chat tool or simply through the web version on the official Midjourney AI website.
Are AI tools suitable for CGI in a professional setting?
If you are looking for that special expression, if you want to find the language of your own design in 3D visualizations, you won't get far without clean prompting and controlled consistency. Helpful are Style Reference --sref for look & light and Omni Reference --oref/--ow for recurring people/objects. For final campaign visuals, high-end CGI/compositing remains important - geometry, material fidelity, physics.
Don't get me wrong: Our 3D artists don't just work with paper and pencil. CGI is created on a computer—obviously. It wouldn't be possible without the right software. Today, AI features help us explore different options, not replace craftsmanship.
The tools aren't the problem. What matters is having precise goals, mastery of the parameters, and a review process that protects the visual language and the brand. (Practical tip: --ar for format, --s for stylization, --seed/--repeat for reproducibility.)
Do I Hold the Copyright to AI-Generated Content?
In the professional world, the question regularly arises as to whether prompt engineers own the rights to AI-generated images. According to the current Midjourney Terms of Service , you own the assets you create to the extent permitted by law; details and exceptions are outlined there. For website visibility, there is Stealth Mode (Pro/Mega). Commercial use: permitted, with a few exceptions.
To be on the safe side, you edit the AI results manually. In the USA, the US Copyright Office (Part 2, 2025)that protection requires recognizable human creativity - pure machine output is not enough. This is where CGI know-how comes into play. Contact our 3D visualization studio for more information.
What Is An AI Midjourney Prompt Engineer?
The profession of prompt engineer has been around for some time now. A prompt engineer creates the prompts, i.e., the voice commands that make working with AI possible in the first place. If you've already worked with Midjourney, ChatGPT, or similar tools, you know that it's not easy. The tools don't quite speak your language. Prompts are essentially parameterization —an understanding of syntax and parameter behavior is helpful.
An AI Midjourney Prompt Engineer works with Midjourney to generate images using prompts. Prompt Engineers often collaborate with marketing teams to develop image series for campaigns.
Broken down into individual steps, the work looks something like this:
– Have a creative idea for how to convey a message visually
– Translate the idea into plain language and discuss it with a team of specialists
– Convert the result into prompts that AI can understand
– Review what the program has created as a team and use additional prompts to refine it until it’s just right
Sounds complicated? Of course—it IS art!

The AI Prompt Engineer—Artist or Computer Geek?
As a 3D visualization studio, we can say from our own experience that our specialists for creating prompts are both.
After all, it naturally takes a tremendous amount of creativity to create high-quality 3D visualizations or 3D animations. Without creativity, nothing works—even if the AI ultimately translates the text instructions into a 3D image.
But without specific knowledge of the programs and the affinity for programming typically associated with stereotypical computer nerds, it just won't work.
Are AI tools creative?
Tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Midjourney create the illusion of creativity. In reality, models simply recombine patterns. Creative authorship arises when a human selects, arranges, and edits. This is precisely what the USCO paper (Part 2). An AI prompt may suffice for a roughly suitable result—but for fine-tuning, humans are needed to monitor and adjust.
In the coming years—and likely decades—there will always be a need for creative people who use these kinds of tools to create CGI. Whether it’s 3D or 2D—we need prompt engineers! And yes: There’s a high demand for talented people.
The Most Useful AI Midjourney Prompts
Admittedly, if you play around with Midjourney long enough, you'll find your favorite prompts. Here's the shortlist— updated and accurate:
– /imagine: generates an image based on your prompt.
– /stealth: controls the visibility of your assets on midjourney.com (Pro/Mega). /show: retrieves older jobs.
– --no: Exclude elements; --stylize/--s: Strict vs. loose interpretation. Parameter list.
– --aspect/--ar: Set the aspect ratio (e.g., 16:9, 3:2). Guides.
– --chaos XX: Control variance (0–100). Parameter List.
– ::X: Set weighting in multi-prompts. Multi-prompts & weights.
– Video: Instead of the old -video- flag, use the Video model (V1) in the web app.
- Resolution: --q influences the level of detail/GPU time, not the number of pixels. Size comes via upscaler & format. Quality - Upscaler (V7) - Resolution/2048×2048.
– Image reference + text: Combine image URL + description; for style/look --sref, for people/objects --oref/--ow .
For specific styles or design types, specify them exactly (“Japanese Anime Style,” “Steampunk Style”). For moods and lighting effects, describe them—for example, “Christmas Lighting” or “Cinematic Lighting.” And if you need to work quickly: Start by iterating in Draft Mode and scale it up afterward.
