AI Midjourney is a text-to-image tool that’s currently shaking up the creative industry. Sensationalist reports claim that creativity will be an unnecessary trait in the future and that artists will no longer be needed. But is that really the case? What can AI Midjourney do, especially when it comes to CGI, and what can’t it do?
What Is Midjourney AI?
Midjourney refers to both the research lab and its AI image generation service. You describe a subject in a text prompt and receive newly generated images. Image references and editing existing images are also part of the tool. A related model family is Stable Diffusion, where access and licensing depend on the specific version and platform.
The Midjourney team is led by David Holz, the co-founder of Leap Motion. Users are already creating "works of art" with Midjourney using Discord bot commands.
Currently, Midjourney is accessible via a Discord bot on the official Midjourney Discord server, or you can sign up directly on the AI Midjourney website to use the web version.
On the website, enter your prompt in the Imagine bar. In Discord, use the /imagine command followed by your image description. Midjourney initially generates several options, letting you choose a direction and develop it further. The official getting started guide explains the workflow.

AI Midjourney 3D Visualization
Midjourney produces concepts and mood boards with a three-dimensional appearance, but no editable 3D geometry. For real products, details such as gaps, hardware, or fabric textures may differ from the reference. For a product series with defined views and material variations, a 3D visualization studio can build geometry from CAD data, dimensions, and references. This allows deliberate control of shape, camera, and lighting, with results checked against the product.
How Does Midjourney Work?: Tutorial
Before you start creating AI images with Midjourney, you'll need to sign up directly on the Midjourney website to use the web version. Alternatively, you can download Discord for Mac or PC.
If you prefer Discord, connect your Discord account to Midjourney and join the official Midjourney server. Servers and individual chat channels are different levels of the interface. The Discord quick start guide shows the appropriate channel and the /imagine command; the old “Join the Beta” entry point is no longer required.
Since Discord also works in a web browser, the program might load directly there. However, there's also a desktop version. Basically, they both work the same way; it's just a matter of personal preference which one you like better.
Midjourney is public by default. Others can view publicly shared images and prompts and remix them under the platform’s terms. A private Discord server alone does not hide your results on the Midjourney website.
To keep creations from public view, use Stealth mode with a Pro or Mega plan. Use it on the Create page, in a direct message to the bot, or on a private Discord server. Step 1: Sign up for AI Midjourney
Sign in at midjourney.com with Google or Discord and choose a monthly or annual subscription. If you have already created images through Discord, start with that Discord account to retain your existing history. Both the website and Discord are standard ways to use the service. According to its community guidelines, Midjourney has no generally available API; unauthorized automation is prohibited.

Step 2: Create Text Prompts
Open the Create page and describe your subject in the Imagine bar. Start with a clear combination of subject, material, setting, viewpoint, and lighting. For example: “An oak lounge chair in a bright living room, three-quarter view, soft window light.” This explores an image concept without specifying an actual manufactured product.
Compare the options and change one aspect at a time, such as the camera angle or lighting mood. This helps you see which descriptions influence the result. For a real product, also check proportions, joints, material details, and logos against approved references.
In Discord, start with /imagine and type in the prompt field that appears. The website does not require this slash command. Parameters such as --ar 16:9 go at the end of the prompt.

For concepts and mood boards, use settings to control image format, style, and references. Check the selected model version: not every parameter works in every version. The following overview distinguishes current features from settings specifically labeled for V7.

Step 3: Organization in the Web Interface
On the Organize page, arrange images in Folders and Folder Groups. Filters and search help you find images by prompt terms or settings. New Features in Midjourney V8.2 and Workflows
As of October 2026, V8.2 is the default version, introduced on July 24, 2026. The official version overview lists available features. The Edit Model can modify images using instructions, combine references, and work with the Editor to fill selected areas or expand the canvas. In practice, you can develop an image concept step by step instead of starting over for every correction. For product images, check after each edit that the relevant details remain intact.

Pros and Cons of AI Midjourney
With AI Midjourney, you can generate digital images relatively quickly from a text prompt. This is useful for comparing early concepts. Both the website and Discord require a paid subscription, even for personal use. See the official plan comparison for current pricing.
Usage rights deserve a closer look. Under Midjourney’s terms, you own the assets you create to the extent permitted by law, subject to the agreement and third-party rights. Companies with more than $1 million in annual revenue need Pro or Mega. Upscaling someone else’s image does not transfer their rights to you.
The public gallery can help you understand image ideas and prompts. Visibility, permitted commercial use, and copyright protection are different questions, however. Before a client project, establish which references may be uploaded and whether the chosen service setup meets the project’s confidentiality needs.
Commercial use and copyright: A subscription does not automatically create copyright protection for every AI result. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2025 report distinguishes purely generated material from protectable human contributions. This concerns U.S. law, not a worldwide rule. In Germany, Section 2 of the Copyright Act requires a personal intellectual creation. For a campaign, also check rights involving brands, people, and source material. CGI usage rights are also defined by contract.
For product marketing, the key distinction is whether you need an open-ended image concept or a specific product shown in repeatable views. CGI is especially useful when the same geometry needs to support different perspectives, material variations, and animations.

So what's the bottom line? Does this mean the end of creativity?
When AI, supported by prompt engineers, quickly produces impressive images, creative work changes. But a generated image is not automatically print-ready: resolution, cropping, color handling, and details must suit the intended medium. Does this development therefore mean the end of art as we know it?
For initial drafts, AI can shorten the path to several visual directions. The quality of a cover, layout, or campaign also depends on typography, hierarchy, the audience, and how all the elements work together. These decisions remain part of the design process.
Strong results with Midjourney and similar tools require a clear brief and design judgment. Choosing the right style, understanding the subject, evaluating variations, and developing a cohesive result are important human contributions.
The same text prompt does not automatically produce an identical image. A fixed seed helps compare settings; the model version, references, and parameters also affect the result. For traceable experiments, save the prompt, seed, version, and settings together.
Midjourney and Stable Diffusion can already produce high-quality images. Choose a tool for the task: open-ended concepts, targeted editing, reference control, or your own local workflow. Evaluate visual appeal and accurate depiction of a specific product separately.
But even that, in our opinion, is by no means the end of creativity. After all, AI can only be as “creative” as the programming and code behind it. So creativity will continue to exist. It will just look different.
It takes skill and creativity to express an image concept, select references, and develop the results. You set the direction and make the selections; Midjourney interprets those inputs and generates image variations.
